Week in the Life: PGY-3

Can you briefly describe “a week in the life” on your current rotation?

Psychiatry Residents

Our week consists of seeing adult and pediatric patients Monday through Friday, with a greater level of autonomy while having expert faculty support. Some residents see pediatric patients a whole day of the week versus a half day of the week. The clinic serves a wide variety of psychiatric conditions ranging from patients with schizophrenia on clozapine to patients only receiving therapy in the setting of social stressors. We also have the capability of referring in-house for TMS and ECT for treatment resistant depression. To help prepare us for clinic we started a half day per week in the latter half of second year. In addition, third year is started at a reduced schedule to help with the transition with time spent reviewing patient and staff messages as a team and discuss difficult cases that arise. Hours are generally seeing patients 8:00am to 5:00pm. We have dedicated didactic and individual and group supervision time spread through out the week. We can see our own therapy patients or refer to an internal therapist. We do not take inpatient call during this year but we take at home outpatient call on a rotating basis.
